How Much Power Does Polysilicon Hold in a Just Global Climate Transition? GCL Technology Speaks at UN Climate Roundtable
On July 11 in Shanghai, the UN Climate Just Transition Roundtable brought together top global leaders to discuss practical pathways toward equitable, low-carbon transformation. GCL Technology Vice President Song Yunbo was invited as a first-round speaker, joining UN Assistant Secretary-General and UN Global Compact Climate Action Advisor Selwin Hart and other domestic and international corporate leaders to share insights on green energy innovation and corporate social responsibility.
Song emphasized: “For PV enterprises, a just transition means driving technology innovation to reduce the carbon footprint across the entire value chain, while ensuring inclusive economic and social development—achieving environmental benefits, economic growth, and social equity in tandem.”
GCL Technology has invested over a decade in R&D and innovation in FBR polysilicon, which now leads globally in technology, cost, and carbon footprint performance. By lowering emissions in its own production processes and enabling downstream customers to reduce Scope 3 emissions, GCL’s polysilicon provides the most direct and economically effective pathway for industries to achieve carbon reduction, offering a practical model for a just global energy transition.
The core of a just transition is balancing the interests of all stakeholders. GCL Technology has implemented multi-stakeholder engagement mechanisms to ensure fairness and inclusivity. In expanding its operations, the company prioritizes local community development:
-
At its Inner Mongolia Xinyuan Polysilicon Base, GCL supports rural and pastoral left-behind children via targeted charitable funding, improving educational and living conditions.
-
At its Jiangsu GCL Silicon Materials Base, GCL volunteers assist elderly residents, students in need, and sanitation workers, fostering community well-being.
During the meeting, the UN Global Compact, together with participants, launched the “Climate Just Transition Action Initiative”, urging companies to integrate just transition principles into corporate strategy, set scientifically-based emission reduction targets aligned with international standards, invest in green jobs and sustainable skills development, implement responsive EHS policies, and actively engage in climate justice dialogue.
In response, GCL Technology has committed to embedding these climate action goals into its long-term strategy, advancing a just, human-centered approach to global decarbonization.
